A Visit to The Shire
Travel south from Auckland over the Bombay Hills to the rich farmland of the Waikato region. Your journey takes you through undulating green hills signaling that you are approaching The Shire. Your guide will give you commentary on the way to Hobbiton with insights into the areas you are travelling through, along with some background to the movies. On arrival at Shire’s Rest you embark on your Hobbiton Movie Set tour. This location is the largest “green set” in the world and the only part of the set remaining in New Zealand. You see 44 hobbit holes, the Mill and double arch bridge, and the party tree. At this stunning location, you can take a photo at the gate to Bilbo’s house, “Bag End”, looking out over the whole set to the hills in the distance. You also have the opportuny to explore inside a Hobbit home. The tour ends with a visit to the Green Dragon Inn for a drink & a deliciuos buffet lunch in the Party Marquee. Enjoy time in the Hobbiton gift shop and the opportunity to spend your souvenir voucher before your return trip to Auckland.

Only 19 miles from downtown Auckland is the city’s largest regional park, the Waitakere Ranges. No other city in New Zealand has such a wonderful asset so close to it. In just 30 minutes, leave behind the bustle of the city and step into the tranquility of the rainforest. Departing with a small group, travel to the Arataki Center perched high on the ridge of the Waitakere Ranges and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views from the Tasman Sea to the Pacific Ocean. Learn about and admire the magnificent traditional Maori carvings. Continue on to the lush rainforest where you can walk the easy bush tracks among giant tree ferns and view New Zealand’s famous kauri trees. Move on to experience the power of the wild and rugged west coast where you’ll feel the black sand beneath your feet as you stroll along some of the most awe-inspiring beaches the world has to offer. This tour departs at 12:30 pm, takes approximately five hours and has a maximum group size of 18 guests.

During your afternoon at leisure in Wellington, consider visiting the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Here you can learn about the art, culture and natural history of the region with a particular focus on Maori and Pacific cultures. A massive museum, the various collections include roughly 70,000 bird specimens, the largest example of the colossal squid, and approximately 13,000 items from historic and contemporary cultures throughout the Pacific Islands.

Middle Earth
Track down the Wellington locations from The Lord of the Rings, with a small group and a guide who's a true fan of the films. The route visits the Shire, wanders through the Gardens of Isengard, and follows the River Anduin to the spot where the hobbits fled the Nazgul to the ferry. From there, it winds through Rivendell and the riverbank Aragorn washed up on. In Miramar, the Weta Cave's Workshop and Miniatures Tour reveals the inner workings of Weta Studios, with film-prop photo ops. Morning refreshments and lunch keep the day going, before a return transfer closes it out at your hotel.
