FUKUOKA

Secrets of the City
Set off on a flat, easy cycling route through Fukuoka with a local guide, starting in the old town of Hakata, home to the city's two biggest festivals, Hakata Gion Yamakasa and Hakata Dontaku. Pedal past temples and shrines, through backstreets of everyday local life, and on to the ruins of Fukuoka Castle, once the largest in Kyushu. The route continues past a local history museum and Ohori Park before reaching the coast for a ride along the sea. Refuel afterward with a bowl of Hakata tonkotsu ramen, the pork-bone broth style that originated here, before a private transfer back to the hotel.
With your private guide, meet a Hakata maiko, an apprentice in Japan's traditional arts, for a private performance of classical dance followed by ozashiki asobi, the parlor games used to entertain visitors. Continue with a tea ceremony, then head to the nearby docks to board a traditional wooden boat for a cruise on the Hakata River, still accompanied by the maiko, passing historical sites and city districts along the water. A private transfer returns you to your hotel at the end.
