Empowering Youth Through Sport: Kensington Cares and Giants of Africa's Impact

The organization harnesses the power of sport to create opportunities for youth across Africa and uplift the next generation to drive the continent forward. 

Through its “Built Within” initiative, Giants of Africa announced in 2021 its mission to build or refurbish 100 basketball courts across the continent. Since 2022, Kensington Cares has contributed US $900,000 toward this effort, helping fund five basketball court locations across four countries: 

• Dagoretti High School Courts, Kenya 

• Umoja 2 Court, Kenya 

• Rubavu Court, Rwanda 

• Marrakech Court, Morocco 

• CPUT Courts, South Africa 

Court locations are selected in close consultation with local communities, ensuring each space becomes a central hub where players can gain access to leagues, events, and a safe place to grow.  

Every court design reflects the spirit of the neighborhood it serves. The newest court at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Cape Town, South Africa features vibrant pinks and oranges inspired by the Bo-Kaap neighborhood, while blues and claw motifs honor the CPUT Cats mascot. 

Beyond building courts, Giants of Africa provides thousands of youth and adults with access to high-quality programming that nurtures leadership, teamwork, and community through the game of basketball. The organization believes in the power of sport as a unifying force that ignites potential and catalyzes change across the continent.  

Giants of Africa Festival returns in 2025 

In 2023, Giants of Africa hosted its inaugural GOA Festival in Kigali, Rwanda, bringing together 320 young men and women from 20 African nations for a week of community, culture, basketball, education, and entertainment. Kensington proudly supported the event by sponsoring both the boys’ and girls’ teams from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), enabling 16 youth (ages 13-19) and three coaches to participate in the week-long tournament.  

GOA Festival returns in 2025, and Kensington is proud to continue its partnership as a Silver Sponsor—once again supporting the DRC’s boys’ and girls’ teams to join the festivities.
