Built in late 1800’s as the headquarters of the Borneo Company Limited, the 137 Pillars House is a beautiful teak wood building that has been carefully restored to reflect its 19th-century origins. In Chiang Mai, the importance and wealth of a property owner was often measured by the size of their Lanna-style Thai houses, and in particular how many pillars (sao) the house had. It was believed that the number of house pillars elevated the homeowner's social status. Impressed by the history and beauty of the house, visitors and journalists were always curious as to why the Borneo house did not have a name. When a publisher requested to write about “the house with the most number of pillars”, the owner at the time decided to count the number of pillars which numbered 137. An old map of the Wat Gate area also referred to house as “Baan 137 Sao”, which translates to "137 Pillars House". Thus, the house came to be known as 137 Pillars House.
Chiang Mai’s dining scene blends authentic northern Thai flavors with contemporary flair, offering something for every palate. For classic local dishes, try Khao Soi Lung Prakit Kad Kom or Huen Muan Jai, both famous for their rich khao soi and Lanna-style specialties. Tam Sa Pa and Dee Moo-tod serve casual, flavorful northern comfort food that’s perfect for families or relaxed lunches. For an elevated take on traditional cuisine, Saiyut and Doctor Sai Kitchen and Lap Bang Ker Kiti Panit highlight refined local recipes using seasonal ingredients. Kiti Panit and The House by Ginger pair historic charm with elegant, modern Thai dining, while Ginger Farm Kitchen offers farm-to-table freshness in a cozy setting. For beautiful garden surroundings, Chom CafÉ and Restaurant and Bodhi Terrace are ideal. For a sophisticated evening, BAAN LANDAI or The Service 1921 at 137 Pillars House provide fine dining with exceptional ambiance.

Take an incredible journey through Chiang Mai's lively night markets with some self-guided time at leisure.
