Get a Lay of the Land
Singapore was once part of British Malaysia for many centuries. It was ruled by the Sultanate of Johor before the British came to the island and set up a port and colony in 1819. After World War II, Singapore became an independent nation and republic. Today Singapore has a diverse population of nearly 5 million people or more which is made up of Chinese, Malays, Indians, Caucasians, Eurasians, and Asians of different origins. Experience the various cultures come alive before your very eyes as you explore each ethnic heritage enclave by turns. At Kampong Glam, admire the quiet majesty of the Sultan’s Mosque with its unmistakable golden dome, explore colorful food eateries, and browse through old-fashioned shops selling batiks, carpets, rattan basket-ware, and exotic perfumes. Travel to the heart of Chinatown and experience the old and the new tradition and modernity in the rows of streets, and traditional shop houses lovingly restored into tempting eateries, teahouses and shops selling Oriental arts, crafts, and souvenirs as well as traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. Little India completes the cultural kaleidoscope with its bustling streets showcasing aromatic and exotic spices, colorful flower-garland shops, vegetable vendors, and busy curry houses.
Your foodie adventure begins in a third-generation family business which serves traditional dishes; Kim Choo's Kitchen. Here you’ll learn about the vast history of the Chinese rice dumplings along with Chinese legends and the significance of the Dragon Boat Festival. Kim Choo Nyonya rice dumplings have been a mainstay in Singapore’s diverse epicurean tapestry since 1945. Today, Kim Choo offers a wide variety of products and services which seek to maintain and uplift the Peranakan culture of the Nanyang. Various aspects of this hybrid Southeast Asian culture – made up of Chinese, Malay and Indian elements – are brought to life here, through the interactive and multimedia exhibits. Highlights include an elaborate 12-day Peranakan wedding, the stories of prominent Peranakans in Singapore's history and how today’s Peranakans have evolved with their culture. Next, visit colorful Peranakan Houses in Joo Chiat. Joo Chiat area is named after Chew Joo Chiat, a wealthy Chinese landowner in the early 20th-century. The area’s identity is especially shaped by its unique pre-war architecture – colorful two-storey shop houses and terrace houses with ornate facades, intricate motifs and ceramic tiles. As one of the country’s best foodie destinations, Joo Chiat is also well-loved by many Singaporeans. End the day exploring cool cafes that sit next to old-world coffee shops selling the famous Katong 'laksa', 'kueh chang' (dumplings) and other Nonya delicacies. Lastly, visit the Old Airport Road Food Centre which is a very popular place in Singapore to sample wallet-friendly local favorites like char kway teow, prawn noodles, Hokkien mee, lor mee, kway chap, satay, rojak and soya bean curd. This hawker centre has the highest number of famous food stalls in comparison with any other places. Bon AppÉtit!

Nurtured by Nature
Your tour begins as you’re whisked away to the 150-year-old Singapore Botanic Gardens, the Lion City’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a star attraction for both tourists and local alike, hosting a variety of collections from all over the world. It is the most visited botanical gardens in the world and is a unique example of the informal English Landscape Movement’s style in an equatorial climate. Ideal for nature enthusiasts of all ages, you’ll view some of the best examples of native and exotic flora in Singapore. Enjoy the lush vegetation, the vibrant flowers and the warmth of the tropics as you stroll through the Gardens' tropical collections. At the Gardens Heritage Museum, view a range of artifacts, plant specimens, and rare botanical paintings, then continue to the Swan Lake for the iconic feature; a large group of Nibong palms. You’ll then have a chance to see the gorgeous Vanda Miss Joaquim, Singapore’s national flower, before heading to the iconic Bandstand. Here you’ll break for lunch in a local restaurant, and afterwards, set off for Gardens by the Bay, an expansive park that is a highlight for any visitor to Singapore. Built at a cost of over one billion dollars, the gardens opened June 2012 and have already been billed as an unmissable attraction. The gardens house two conservatories, a Cloud Forest and Flower Dome, which are climate-controlled indoor glasshouses. The Flower Dome replicates the cool-dry climate of the Mediterranean and South Africa, while the Cloud Forest replicates a cool-moist climate found in Tropical Montane regions such as Mount Kinabalu in Sabah and high elevation areas in South America. Within the gardens, you'll find 18 impressive Supertrees (tree-like structures), which are vertical gardens up to 150-feet tall, each performing a multitude of functions. Along with providing a bird’s eye view of the entire gardens, they also collect rainwater, generate solar power and act as vending ducts for the park’s conservatory. After a day spent exploring these incredible monuments to botany, you will be returned to your hotel.

Explore with an Expert
Begin a day full of historical insight as you depart for Kranji War Memorial. Dedicated to the Allied servicemen and women who gave their lives defending Singapore, the memorial’s shape reflects the contributions made to the Allied cause by members of the navy, air force and army. The site’s 12 columns are inscribed with the names of over 24,000 servicemen missing in action while the War Cemetery contains the graves of 4,458 of the fallen. You’ll then head to the Old Ford Factory. This quaint art deco building was the site of the British surrender to the Japanese on 15 February 1942, marking the fall of Singapore during World War II. Memories and reflections of the hardships faced by those who lived through the darkest years of Singapore's modern history have been captured befittingly through a permanent exhibition gallery. After lunch, you’ll hop on to the Singapore cable car to catch a bird’s eye view of Singapore’s city skyline, the harbor and Sentosa itself. Fort Siloso was built in the late 19th century during a time when Singapore was an important trading port for the British, so it was imperative that the island was protected from sea invasion. Today, more than 70 years after the war, Fort Siloso stands as a beloved historical site. The only preserved coastal fort in Singapore. Begin your exploration from the Fort Siloso Skywalk, a treetop trail set 11 storeys above ground. Let yourself be transported back in time through the stories of people who lived during the Japanese Occupation and experience the Allied forces’ counterattack and the end of the war through six interactive zones. Before you leave, share a message of peace on the wall of poppies.

A Change of Scenery
Today you’ll be transported back in time to 1960’s Singapore as you explore nearby Pulau Ubin. This charming island is the second largest off the shore of Singapore, after Sentosa. All cares are left behind once you arrive at this island located off the North Eastern end of Singapore. Known for it’s unique geological make up of granite over five smaller islands, interspersed by low-lying mangroves and tidal rivers, Pulau Ubin is truly a feast for the eyes. It has been a forgotten backyard for many years and finally came onto the radar for redevelopment by the government due to the limited landmass on the Singapore Island. Considered to be one of the last kampongs (villages) in Singapore, the island still retains the rustic beauty and simplicity of a bygone era. You’ll wander along the many trails and see how the local residents live a much simpler life than those in the booming metropolis nearby. With no access to the modern and efficient public utilities on mainland Singapore, the villagers rely on wells for water, generators for electricity and depend on traditional farming and fishing for subsistence. Every so often you will come across rustic-looking houses, be greeted by friendly local villagers and may even stumble upon wildlife such as Malayan water monitors, hornbills or one of the many wild boar. Pulau Ubin is a breath of fresh air and the perfect escape from the city.
