Today enjoy a spectacular sunset as you cruise down the magnificent Zambezi River. After a transfer from your hotel, board the vessel resembling a turn-of-the-century riverboat. Merely skimming the water, it takes up to 14 guests and it is furnished in teak and brass for a taste of Victoria splendor. Hwange National Park is the largest game reserve in Zimbabwe, an area of 14,651km2. Formerly occupied by the San bushmen, the Nhanzwa, and latterly the royal hunting ground for Matabele king, Mzilikazi, the area was finally gazetted for wildlife conservation in 1928. The park is close to the edge of the Kalahari desert, a region with little water and very sparse, xerophile vegetation. Most of the park is underlain by Kalahari Sands. As a result of it's location, seasonal wetlands form grasslands in this area. In areas without rivers, grassy pan depressions and pans have formed. Some of these pans fill with rainwater, while others are fed by natural groundwater seeps. Many of the pans are additionally supplied by water pumped from underground by park authorities. The park has a huge diversity of landscapes, vegitation, and game viewing.

A haven for over 100 mammal and 400 bird species, the park protects populations of all of Zimbabwe’s endangered species, elephants numbering in excess of 20,000 (up from around 4,000 when the park was proclaimed). Large prides of lion and buffalo are frequently seen here and you have a good chance of spotting leopard and rhino in addition to cheetah and spotted hyena. The wild and woolly brown hyena also occurs here and is something of a rarity. It is the only protected area where gemsbok and brown hyena occur in reasonable numbers. The population of African wild dogs to be found in Hwange is thought to be of one of the larger surviving groups in Africa today. Other game include herds of zebra, African water buffalo, impala species, giraffe and a wide variety of birds, just to name a few.

The abundance of wildlife that inhabits the limits of Hwange National Park will keep safari enthusiasts occupied for days. Once a royal hunting ground of the Zulu warrior king Mzilikazi, the park was founded in 1928 and to this day it attracts visitors from across the globe who are keen to get closer to its elusive residents. The natural salt-licks provide elephants with their favorite mud holes for wallowing, and the man-made waterholes give much needed water during the hot parched winter months when everything else dries up.
