Embark on the adventure of a lifetime with a gorilla trekking experience through the lush forests of Volcanoes National Park! The terrain can vary from well-marked paths to steep, muddy, and uneven trails, so a moderate to high level of fitness is essential for making the most of this thrilling experience. The exact trekking location is determined on the day of your excursion, meaning your trek could be a shorter, easier walk or a more physically demanding hike, but the reward of encountering these magnificent gorillas in their natural habitat is always worth the effort.
To prepare, we recommend building stamina with regular walks, hikes, or stair climbing in the weeks leading up to your trip. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good traction are a must, as the trails can be slippery. Long pants, a lightweight long-sleeved shirt, and gardening gloves help protect against scratches and insect bites, while a waterproof jacket comes in handy for the Volcanoes National Park ever-changing weather. Leg gaiters are recommended to keep mud and debris out of your boots—some lodges provide them, but having your own ensures you're prepared for all hikes. Pack a small daypack with essentials like water, energy snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a waterproof cover for your gear.
For the best viewing experience, bring a pair of binoculars to enhance your chances of spotting gorillas and other incredible wildlife. If you’re bringing a camera, a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is ideal for capturing moments in the dimly lit rainforest while keeping a comfortable distance from the gorillas.
Hiring a porter is highly recommended—they’ll assist with carrying your bag and provide support on the more challenging sections of the trail. If you have any health or mobility concerns or would like to arrange a porter in advance, your Destination Expert is happy to assist.
To ensure the health of the gorillas, all trekkers must be in good health—anyone showing flu-like symptoms will not be permitted to participate, as these primates are highly susceptible to human illnesses. When in close proximity to the gorillas, wearing a face mask is mandatory to minimize any risk of disease transmission and help protect these amazing creatures.
With the right preparation and a sense of adventure, you’ll be embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime experience, witnessing these incredible gorillas in one of the most breathtaking and remote locations on Earth, while contributing to their conservation for future generations!
