Trip Summary

Expand [+]

Enjoy a private tour in this overlooked but historically important country in Africa. Northern Sudan is the ancient kingdoms of Nubia, and the older Egyptian civilizations of the Upper Nile. Safe and unexpectedly hospitable, this area is one of our insider favorites. Start your tour in the capital city of Khartoum where your private guide will explain the importance of the junction of the Blue Nile and White Nile, and the history of this ancient crossroads. Visit the National Museum, Khalifa's house, Mehdi's Tomb, the old Souk. Then depart north to the enigmatic Pyramids of Meroe. Smaller than the pyramids of Giza, they are still impressive. Stay overnight under the desert stars in your private expedition encampment, with the company of your guide and driver. Continue to the 6th Cataract of the Nile, before returning to Khartoum.

Sudan is a vast country and the northern area of this tour is a vast distance away from the troubled southern provinces. The desert culture places very high importance on treating visitors with open hospitality, and the Sudanese values of respect and honesty make theft a rare occurrence. As with many parts of the world, remote places often hold the best rewards. Credit cards, ATM cards and travelers checks are not accepted in Sudan - so visitors must bring sufficient USD cash.

Travel in confidence knowing our in-country staff are available 24/7, and able to anticipate and adjust to your travel needs. Enjoy this tour as a stand-alone vacation, or expand and customize with some of our other itineraries.

Khartoum is the capital of Sudan, and is located at the confluence point of the White Nile flowing north from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile flowing west from Ethiopia. The location where the two Niles meet is known as "al-Mogran". The main Nile continues to flow north towards Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea. Divided by the Niles, Khartoum is a tripartite metropolis with an estimated overall population of over a million people consisting of Khartoum proper, and linked by bridges Khartoum North called (al-Khart?m Bahr?) and Omdurman (Umm Durm?n) to the west. The largest museum in Khartoum, and indeed all of Sudan, is the National Museum of Sudan. Founded in 1971, it contains works from different epochs of Sudanese history. Among the exhibits are two Egyptian temples of Buhen and Semna which were originally built by Queen Hatshepsut and Pharaoh Tuthmosis III respectively but relocated to Khartoum upon the flooding of Lake Nasser.

The area often is referred to as Nubia. This city was the capital of the Kingdom of Kush for several centuries. The city of Meroë was on the edge of Butana and there were two other Meroitic cities in Butana, Musawwarat es-Sufra, and Naqa. The site of the city of Meroë is marked by more than two hundred pyramids in three groups, of which many are in ruins.
